EDUCATORS: GET THE FACTS ON YOUTH VAPING. EMPOWER Vape-Free YOUTH. It is dangerous for young people to use e-cigarettes (also known as vapes). Most vapes contain nicotine. As an educator, you can talk with your students about the risks of vaping. Nicotine can harm the developing brain. Brain development continues until about age 25. Youth nicotine exposure can cause addiction and harm learning, memory and attention. What is an e-cigarette? Students refer to electronic cigarettes by many different names: vapes, disposables, vape pens, mods, e-hookahs. They also refer to them by brand names, such as: Hyde, Puff Bar, JUUL. Vapes come in many shapes, sizes, and flavors - and many of them are easy to conceal. Some vapes look like cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Others can be the same size and shape as a USB flash drive or pen. Other devices can be as big as a smartphone. There are many types of vapes. Some are disposable. Others are rechargeable and refillable. E-cigarettes come in various flavors, including fruit, candy, mint, and menthol. About 85% of youth who vape use flavors. Vapes heat a liquid into an aerosol (tiny particles o droplets in the air) that a person inhales. Vape aerosol can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, such as heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals. As an educator, you play an important role in your students' lives. What are the health risks of vaping fro youth? EMPOWER Vape-Free YOUTH. Most vapes contain nicotine. Nicotine can harm brain development in young people. This can impact their learning, memory, attention, mood and impulse control. Adolescent brains do not fully develop until about the age of 25. The developing brain is more vulnerable to nicotine addiction than the adult brain. Using nicotine in adolescence may also put youth at risk for addiction to other substances in the future. Vape aerosol can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, such as heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals. When a person is addicted to nicotine and stops using it, their body and brain have to get used to not having nicotine. This can cause temporary symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms include feeling irritable, restless, anxious or depressed, having trouble sleeping or concentrating; and craving nicotine. Students might vape when stressed or anxious, creating a cycle of nicotine addiction. But nicotine addiction can also be a source of stress for young people. Empower your students with positive coping skills like being physically active, eating a healthy diet, drinking enough water, and getting enough sleep. With school, friends, and everything else, students have a lot on their plates. Nicotine addiction shouldn't be added to it. Youth might turn to vaping to try to deal with stress or anxiety. The most common reason students give for continuing to vape is “I am feeling anxious, stressed, or depressed.” Almost all e-cigarettes (vapes) sold contain nicotine. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance, and nicotine addiction can be a source of stress. When a person who is addicted to nicotine stops using it, the body and brain have to get used to not having nicotine. This can cause temporary withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms can include irritability, feeling anxious or depressed, and problems concentrating. Youth may vape to relieve these symptoms, creating a cycle of nicotine addiction. Most students who vape want to quit. Quitting smoking is associated with improved mood and decreased stress. Scientists are still learning about the effects of quitting vaping on mental health.
