The Medicare population aged 65 years or older is primarily non-Hispanic white for the years analyzed. Only ~10% of Medicare patients are of any other race/ethnicity.
Chart Explanation: The chart shows the distribution of race/ethnicity, by year, by age, and by year and gender. The y-axis (vertical line) shows the percentage of patients. The x-axis (horizontal line) shows the race/ethnicity groups by either year, age groups, or year and gender.
Because diagnoses for medical conditions are key to the charts shown in the CKD Surveillance System and they come from claims submitted by providers for the fee-for-service parts of Medicare, Part A (hospital care) and Part B (ambulatory care), we restricted our analysis sample to beneficiaries aged 65 years or older who have Parts A and B coverage for the entire calendar year and have at least 1 outpatient visit in the calendar year.

Between 20% and 25% of beneficiaries each year used Part C, managed care/Medicare Advantage plans, and are excluded because their care was paid on a capitated basis and claims with diagnoses are not available.

This indicator shows the demographic characteristics of the Medicare data used throughout this web site that are known risk factors for chronic kidney disease such as older age groups and non-white racial and ethnic groups.
