The population aged 65 years or older is primarily non-Hispanic white for the years analyzed. Only ~10% of Medicare patients are of any other race/ethnicity. Non-Hispanic whites continue to be the largest racial/ethnic group for every Medicare age category studied.
Chart Explanation: The chart shows on the y-axis (vertical line) the percentage of patients, and the x-axis (horizontal line) shows the age groups by year, gender, or race.
Because diagnoses for medical conditions are key to the charts shown in the CKD Surveillance System and they come from claims submitted by providers for the fee-for-service parts of Medicare, Part A (hospital care) and Part B (ambulatory care), we restrict our analysis sample to beneficiaries aged 65 years or older who have Parts A and B coverage for the entire calendar year and have at least 1 outpatient visit in the calendar year.

Between 20% and 25% of beneficiaries each year used Part C, managed care/Medicare Advantage plans, and are excluded since their care was paid on a capitated basis and claims with diagnoses are not available.

This indicator shows the demographic characteristics of the Medicare data used throughout this web site that are known risk factors for chronic kidney disease such as older race and non-white racial and ethnic groups.
